15 American Road Movies: A Genre of Its Own

An unparalleled sense of freedom. The vastness of a landscape. The romance of a road – no wonder America fell in love with a road movie. Apart from criminals on the run, road travellers in films are also often on a journey of some sort of “self-discovery”, and one’s physical journey often occurs in tandem with one’s spiritual transformation. It may be a journey of seeking connection or redemption, it can be fun or sad, or both, but, in any instance, it sure is unforgettable.

The Grapes of Wrath (1940) Thelma & Louise (1991) It Happened One Night (1934)

Easy Rider (1969) Rain Man (1988) Kalifornia (1993)

Wild at Heart (1990) Stagecoach (1939) Badlands (1973)

The Straight Story (1999) Bonnie & Clyde (1967) Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

How about ‘Detour’ from 1945? And, if you include ‘Stagecoach’, then how about ‘Hell’s Heroes’, 1929?

Great list, some I’ve seen but I do love a road movie. When I picture one it’s a scene from On The Road, with a red truck, a blue blue sky and a golden cornfield. Beautiful.

Very cool list there, you don’t hear about Road Films much these days, so it’s a nice throwback.

  4. These make a wonderful collection of films from different eras. They’re all road films, but so different from each other.
