Nice list. I would just add Metropolis (1927), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), THX 1138 (1971), Soylent Green (1973), Stalker (1979), Cloud Atlas (2012).

Thanks for your suggestions. The movies you mention have powerful future visions. I was not too impressed by Fahrenheit 451 or Cloud Atlas and still have to see TNX 1138 and Soylent Green. I think that Metropolis is important here, though.

Well noticed, except that I can’t agree on ‘Soylent Green’. It was awfully shot, cheap sets and trying to be kind of a detective movie that didn’t work well.

Brazil has to be a favourite of mine. The theme has clearly provided a great stage for filmmakers to express themselves when you look at some of the classics listed above.

Thanks, good point but you have to draw a line someplace if you are to have your “20”, and I think “Battle Royal” belongs more to my other list titled “20 Films You Should Think Twice Before Watching” in terms of the content 🙂

That’s a pretty good list, I am happy that there’re no mindless blockbusters here like it often happens with similar lists. It’s good to see no Alien/2001 too as they always end up on this kind of lists.
I definitely cannot agree about Elysium though. District 9 was so much better, original and sincere.
How about some older movies like Metropolis and The Invasion of Body Snatchers? >:)

In retrospect, I agree that “Metropolis” should have been included (I guess, I was thinking in other kinds of films). I do not think I’ve seen “The Invasion of Body Snatchers”. It sounds very interesting, I will look into it asap, thank you!

There are 4 different versions of that movie. The 1956 and 1978 are considered to be a classic. I’ve watched only the 1956 version and it really hit me. It’s psychologically scary…
Have you watched Tarkovsky’s movies?

I think I will watch the older versions. It’s been awhile since I published this list, but because I decided to leave out any films with horror/disturbing/psychological elements, I had a relatively neat little list from the start. I also didn’t focus on space as such. I was considering including Logan’s Run, maybe. As for Tarkovsky. He is a genius. I just need a separate list for his films.

I think it’s a right choice to see the older versions (the newest were criticized ruthlessly). I noticed that you actually dud that and it’s a good choice, I think too often sci-fi and horror are mixed in various lists, but these genres are pretty different at their core.

Good call with Children of Men and Gattaca! As far as other dystopian or futuristic movies are concerned, I would think Ghost in the Shell (the original, not the Scarlett Johansson remake) would be on there. The Matrix owes a lot to that anime movie. I’d also put Battle Royale and Akira could be on there.

No problem. Battle Royale is a great film. As far as Akira and GITS is concerned among others, Japan really knows how to make dystopian works in their animation.
