In no particular order:
1. The Master (2012)
2. The Wicker Man (1973)
3. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
4. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
5. Ticket to Heaven (1981)
6. Crash (1996)
7. Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
8. Sound of My Voice (2011)
9. Suspiria (1977)
10. Faults (2015)
Hi there. I’d personally have “The Invitation” in there somewhere.

Hi, yeah. I haven’t seen the Invitation yet, but I hear it’s an amazing film. Is it really about cults, though?

Hi. Yes, “cults” play a central role in the plot.

Excellent list. I saw Faults (2015) recently and it’s an excellent low budget character gem.

If religion can be classified as a cult then Romania’s “Beyond The Hills” deserves a mention. An utterly scary film on the powers of persuasion and influence.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to check this out. I also love foreign-language films, and Romania is not the country that comes immediately to mind when you think European films. This will be exciting.

There’s been some pretty heavy, bleak but socially incisive stuff coming out of Romanian New Wave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_New_Wave
I’ve reviewed a few on the titles in that list on my site. 😉

I’d suggest “Holy Smoke” (1999). Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel, directed and cowritten by Jane Campion. Winslet’s family believes she’s fallen in with a cult and hires deprogrammer Keitel to free her from it. It doesn’t go as planned.

Great list and a great idea too! Can’t disagree with The Master at number one.

Pretty great list, I can’t think of all that many cult movies, all the more to watch I suppose! Anyways, I’ve just nominated you for the Mystery Blogger Award! https://spacecortezwrites.com/2017/03/08/mystery-blogger-award/

The Wicker Man still gives me chills.

Yeah, to me too! Eerie, a different kind of “horror” altogether.

Yes, it’s an atypical horror that revels in a strangeness that has largely been unequaled.
